Garcia signs with Rice for track and field

  MESA, AZ - Mesa has a long history of sending track and field athletes to NCAA Division I schools and Matt Garcia (So., Phoenix, AZ/Sunnyslope H.S.) has joined that list by signing a letter-of-intent to attend Rice University next year.

  Garcia is currently ranked No. 3 in the nation in the hammer throw with a loss of 189-6. That ranking is heading into this week's Region I championship which is being held at Mesa Tuesday and Thursday. The NJCAA Division I Championship will be held May 14-16 in Plano, Texas.

  Garcia will be attempting to better his third place showing at last year's nationals  which were held at Mesa. He recorded a 182-1 at that meet.

  Rice is a member of Conference USA and is located in Houston, Texas.
