Mesa to have 37 athletes in 34 events at track and field championships
MESA, AZ - When the 2014 NJCAA National Track and Field Championships begin at Mesa's John D. Riggs Stadium Thursday, the T-Birds will be represented by 34 athletes competing in 37 events.
MCC is hosting the national meet for the first time since 1972 and the event will be contested primarily at night for the first time ever.
Competition gets underway Thursday at 3:00 p.m. Complete details can be found at the official website linked above.
For MCC, five different athletes will be entered in two events each.
The women will have three:
Jessica Schmitt (So., Long Island, NY/Dobson H.S.) - Shot put seeded seventh at 44-2 1/4 and hammer seeded 14th at 143-4.
Meghan Blankenship (Fr., Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain H.S.) - Hammer seeded seventh at 151-11 and discus seeded 20th at 131-0.
Kadie McNamara (So., Mesa, AZ/Desert Vista H.S.) - discus seeded sixth at 149-8 and hammer seeded tenth at 150-1.
On the men's there there are two athletes in two events each:
Erik Johnson (So., Phoenix, AZ/South Mountain H.S.) - shot put seeded seventh at 54-2 1/2 and discus seeded 16th at 148-8.
Cody Roberts (Fr., Chandler, AZ/Basha H.S.) - shot put seeded 16th at 50-6 1/2 and discus seeded 18th at 148-3.
The championships run through Saturday.
