Mesa Softball Beats Paradise Valley 13-2, But Falls to Phoenix College, 7-2: T-Birds Play PV Saturday at 10 AM

Phoenix, AZ - The Mesa Thunderbirds fought hard on the opening day of the Region I - ACCAC DII tournament Friday at Phoenix College.  The #3 seed T-Birds defeated the #2 seed Paradise Valley Pumas in the opening game, 13-2, but fell in the winner's bracket game to Phoenix College, 7-2.

In game one vs PV, Mesa collected a total of 22 hits, 10 of which went for extra bases with two home runs, one from Ryann Holmes and the other coming from Bailee Snyder.  Corinna Rascon went 4-5, with two doubles and two runs scored.  Megan Campbell went 2-3 with two doubles, three RBI's and a run scored.

In the circle, Sammy Quezada pitched a complete game, allowing six hits, two runs and striking out six.

In game two vs PC, the T-Birds started its scoring with a solo homerun by Corinna Rascon to tie the game at one.  Down 2-1 in the fifth inning, Lindsey Paboucek walked to lead off the inning.  On a sacrifice bunt by Kelsey Cook, Paboucek took advantage of a vacated third base.  Tori Gonzalez would then single in Paboucek from third to tie the game at two.

A five run sixth inning doomed the T-Birds though as PC just kept the line moving.  Mesa would fall, 7-2, forcing the T-Birds into the loser side of the bracket.  Paradise Valley defeated Chandler-Gilbert in the first losers game of the day, which leaves Mesa and Paradise Valley to once again do battle first thing Saturday morning at 10 am.

The winner will advance to the championship round against Phoenix College later that day.
