Sophomore Day Ends Well For Mesa Softball in Split with Central AZ

Mesa, AZ - The way the day began for the Mesa Thunderbirds was completely different than the way it began... and in a good way.  After being shutout in game one Saturday afternoon to the Central Arizona Vaqueras and eye-balling a 6-0 deficit in game two, Mesa finally decided that they wanted to play some softball.

With two outs in the bottom of the third inning, Mesa rallied off six straight runs to tie the game at six.  Mesa loaded the bases with singles by Ryann Holmes and Bailee Snyder and after Sammy Quezada was hit by a pitch, Lindsey Paboucek singled home Mesa's first two runs of the day.  Kennedy Partee was then hit by a pitch which was followed by a double by Kelsey Cook, which made it a 6-4 game.  With Partee on third and Cook on second, Mesa was able to take advantage of a pickoff attempt by the Central catcher, allowing Partee to score from third to make it a 6-5 game.

A Tori Gonzalez single past the Vaquera third baseman scored Cook from third and Mesa tied the game at six.

Gaby Lopez then threw a shutdown top of the fourth inning for Mesa which Amber Saiz led off the bottom of the fourth with a single.  Two walks and a fly ball later, Lindsey Paboucek again singled home Saiz and Holmes to make it an 8-6 game.

The T-Birds would then tack on three in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth inning to officially complete to victory.  Paboucek in the second game went 3-4 with two doubles and four RBI's while Amber Saiz, Kelsey Cook, Ryann Holmes and Bailee Snyder each collected two hits each.

After allowing six runs in the first three innings of the game, Lopez buckled down and allowed just two hits with two strikeouts, earning her 13 win of the season.

Mesa finishes the regular season with a 25-27 overall record and 21-27 conference record.  The T-Birds will now prepare for the regional tournament which will take place May 4-5 at Phoenix College.  Times and official tournament bracket will be release by Monday of next week, continue to check the mesatbirdsports.com site for all the details.
