T-Birds sweep Centralia

Mesa, AZ

Game 1

The Mesa softball team welcomed Centralia College from Centralia, Wash Wednesday afternoon and showed them some home town hospitality by beating them in two games, 8-0(6 in.), 9-4.

Kendra Whelan(So., Flagstaff, AZ, Coconino H.S.) started game one off by ripping the first pitch for a triple.

After a walk and hit by pitch, Mariah Gonzales(So., Gilbert, AZ, Highland H.S.) hit one at the Centralia second baseman which she could not handle, scoring Whelan.

A few batters later, Meggan Horn(So., Flagstaff, AZ, Coconino H.S.) hit one to the first baseman who also couldn't handle it, notching the score at 2-0.

The big hit of the inning came when Mishell Quinonez(So., Douglas, AZ, Douglas H.S.) singled in two runs with a hit to right center field.

The first four batters scored for Mesa in the first inning.

Mesa added another run in the third inning and scored another three runs in the sixth inning to run rule Centralia in game one, 8-0.

The main pitcher for Mesa was Kaylee Romo(So., Flagstaff H.S., Coconino H.S.) who pitched four and two thirds innings, allowing five hits and no runs.

Game 2

Nikki Verdugo(Fr., Phoenix, AZ, Trevor Browne H.S.) pitched six and one third innings, allowing one earned run on four hits.

Mesa again had the first three batters of the game score in the first inning with the big hit come from a Mariah Gonzales double that scored two runs.

The T-Birds scored four more runs in the fourth inning on three hits.

Mesa went on to score two more in the sixth to finish off the two game sweep.

Mesa will be back home on Saturday for a double header against Pima, first pitch at noon.
