Late inning rallies lead to softball split at Glendale

GLENDALE, AZ - Mesa did it in the first game and Glendale in the second as the two teams scored late in victories in a softball split Saturday.

The T-Birds scored twice in the sixth of the opener for a 4-3 win and then saw the Gauchos plate four in the sixth of the nightcap for a 6-5 victory.

With her team trailing 3-2 entering the sixth in game one, Brittney Ramos (Fr., Yuma, AZ/Kofa H.S.) began the rally with a one-out single and scored on a base hit by Kayla Bradford (Fr., St. David, AZ/St. David H.S.). A double by Bridget Kruck (So., Lynden, Wash/Lynden Christian H.S.) plated Bradford with what proved to be the winning run.

In game two MCC jumped to a 4-0 lead in the first. Kendra Whelan (So., Flagstaff, AZ/Coconino H.S.) led off the game with her second home run of the year. After singles by Alina Lopez (Fr., Chandler, AZ/Chandler H.S.) and Mariah Gonzales (So., Gilbert, AZ/Highland H.S.), Ramos delivered her first of the season, a three-run shot.

GCC, however, put together a four-run sixth, trailing 5-2, to secure the split.

Ramos and Kruck were each 2-3 in the first game. Whelan, Lopez, Gonzales, Ramos and Korynn Molina (Fr., Tempe, AZ/Marcos de Niza H.S.) all had two hits in the second game.

Mesa returns home from a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader with South Mountain Tuesday.
