No. 5 Men's tennis opens NJCAA nationals mostly with byes

  Tucson, AZ – The fifth-ranked Mesa men's tennis team has seeded players in six of the nine flights at the NJCAA Division I National Men's Tennis Championship with all receiving byes into Tuesday's second round.

  Since the T-Birds do not receive any points for the byes they are currently tied for 14th place with four points.

  MCC did have two singles players and one doubles team see action Monday.

  Gonzalo Fernandez took his No. 2 singles opening match 6-2, 6-1 over Chris Doyal of Collin and will face fifth-seeded Manuel Pilotto of Laredo, Tuesday morning.

  At number four singles Johan Prinsen took a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Harrison Zammitt of Iowa Central and will meet Nick Freeman of Kaskaska Tuesday.

  In doubles, however, MCC's No. 2 team of Maxim Kirsch and Lucas Severo lost to Alberto Mello and Juan David Ramirez of Laredo, 0-6, 3-6.

  Meanwhile the T-Birds's seeded players rested Monday. Kyrylo Kryvchun is seeded No. 4 at No. 1 singles; Kirsch is No. 5 in the third singles flight; Jorge Sala is the third seed at No. 5 and Lucas Severo is seeded sixth at No. 6.

  In doubles, Fernandez and Kryvchun are the No. 6 seed at No. 1 and Corey Pabst and Prinsen are fifth seeded at No. 3 doubles.

  The tournament is being played at the Reffkin Tennis Center.
