Men's tennis tied for lead after first day of NJCAA nationals

  Plano, Texas –   It was a big day for the men's tennis team on the first day of the NJCAA Division I National Championship Monday as MCC scored victories in four of the six singles flights and all three doubles and was tied for the lead with host Collin at 14 points.

  Gergo Rendek took his No. 2 singles match over seventh-seeded Bruno Salama, of Cowley, 6-1, 6-7 (5), 6-3.

  At No. 4 Johann Prinsen won 6-3, 6-1 against Evan Chubb, of Mississippi-Gul Coast, 6-3, 6-1.

  Lucas Savero was an easy, 6-0, 6-1 victor against Nicholas Fiefield, Iowa Central.

  Jeff Martin took a solid 6-2, 6-1 win over Austin Moore, of Mississippi-Gulf Coast.

  MCC players who lost in the first round were Jorge Sala at No. 1, 1-6, 6-1, 3-6, to Sebastian Osorio, of Copiah-Lincoln and Ali Moin who fell to Thomas Golden, of Laredo, 1-6, 0-6.

  In doubles Rendek and Martin combined to top Mateo Garcia and Carlos Trujilo, of Hinds, 6-4, 6-3.

  Prinsen and Sala took a 6-2, 6-1 win against Treston Diaz and Luigi Fighera, of Harford at No. 2.

  Erik Dallman and Severo blanked Gunoor Virdi and Zack Wisniewski, of College of Lake County, 6-0, 6-0.

  The tournament continues Tuesday.
