Men's Tennis Wins Four Matches at NJCAA Before Rain Arrives

  Plano, Texas - The first day of play at the NJCAA Men's Tennis Championship was successful for the Mesa men, if a bit soggy.

  MCC managed to get four singles matches in, winning all of them, and had one singles player and a doubles team receive first round byes.

  The T-Birds won at No. 1-3 singles, as well as No. 5, and Andy Nguyen (Fr., Bien Ha, Vietnam/Hamilton (AZ) H.S.) received a bye at No. 6.

  Gustavo D'Ascenzi (So., Campinas, Brazil/Colegio Fleming H.S,) won his opening match at No. 1 singles over Kevin Karczynski, of Moraine Valley (Ill.), 6-4, 6-1.

  Oriel Felipe (So., Barcelona, Spain/IPSI H.S.) was victorious at No. 2 over Samuel Raymond, of DuPage (Ill.), 6-4.6-1.

  Kevin McMahon (Fr., Tempe, AZ/Corona del Sol H.S.) topped Bobby Frantz, of Harfotd (Md.), 6-3, 6-3.

  Ryan Huss (So., Mesa, Red Mountain H.S.) won over Joseph Summers, of Itawamba (Miss.), 6-0, 6-0.

  Justin Haag was playing Javier Decalire, of Moriane Valley, at No. 4 when the rain arrived.

  No MCC doubles play was completed. 

  Gabriel Cerritos (Fr., Mesa, AZ/Mountain View H.S.) and Haag were scheduled to play Ricardo Berlinga and Edgar Polanco, of Jacksonville (Texas) at No. 1.

  Felipe and Nguyen were to meet Daniel Aoacilble and Gil Lim, of Jacksonville at No. 2.

  D'Ascenzi and Huss received a bye at No. 3.

  Play continues Tuesday.
