No. 14 Mesa Men's Soccer took care of business Saturday night in their season opener, defeating a revamped Chandler-Gilbert team, 2-1.
In a physical game the Coyotes seemed to have caught the T-Birds off guard with their resistance to Mesa's force early on. Though the T-Birds dominated the ball for most of the contest, winning the shots on goal contest (3 to 14) and earning more corner kicks (14 to 0) CGCC found a way to score first. In the fifth minute the Coyotes snuck one past Mesa goalie Landon Johnson to take the early lead.
MCC would respond after regaining their composure as freshman Caden Dosmann found the back of the net in the 30th minute. Dosmann found a ball that ricocheted off CGCC goalie Noah Plummer and punched it home to tie the game at one a piece.
The physicality continued to start the second half but Mesa used it to their advantage and in the 67th minute Joseph Rodriguez found Dosmann on a cross kick which Dosmann scorched past Plummer, giving Mesa the 2-1 advantage.
Though CGCC did not have many chances to score, when the Coyotes did have a look at the net Johnson made plays to shut them down. In the 82nd minute Johnson made an acrobatic effort to deflect a shot to help the T-Birds seal the deal.
With the win No. 14 Mesa improves their record to 1-0 (1-0 ACCAC). The T-Birds will be back in action on Tuesday as they host Gateway in their home opener.
