Tucson, AZ- The Pima Aztecs men's soccer team defeated the Mesa Thunderbirds Monday night in the Region I first round playoff match, 3-0, at the Kino Sports Complex in Tucson, AZ.
In a very competitive and physical game, the Aztecs scored only one goal in the first half. Mesa played more of a defensive style first half but turned to offensive attack mode in the second, trying to tie the game back up at one.
The T-Birds had three good corner kick oppurtunities, with one goal attempt hitting the top bar with Pima clearing it to midfield. Mesa also had two penalty kicks from just outside the box that they couldn't convert into any scores.
Mesa played tough all game with the Aztecs. They scored on a penalty kick with two minutes to play and scored another goal less than a minute later.
The T-Birds finished the season with a 9-11-1 regular season record. This is the third straight that Pima has defeated Mesa in the playoffs.
