MESA, AZ - Ari Sanchez (So., Gilbert, AZ/Highland H.S.) turned and fired from about 30 yards out and scored the game winner with 15 seconds left to play as Mesa topped Scottsdale, 2-1, in men's soccer Tuesday at John D. Riggs Stadium.
Sanchez' seventh goal of the season prevented MCC from going into overtime for the first time this season and kept the T-Birds in the hunt for a Region I playoff berth with a 9-6 record. Sam Ciora (Fr., Gilbert, AZ/Highland H.S.) had the assist on the winning goal.
Mesa had grabbed a 1-0 lead in the final minute of the first half on the third goal of the season by Ignacio Rios (So., Mesa, AZ/Dobson H.S.) with Sanchez assisting.
Anthony Shivers equaled things for the Artichokes in the 64th minute, but Carlos Becerra (Fr., Mesa, AZ/Skyline H.S.) made four saves in limiting SCC.
The T-Birds remain home Thursday hosting the ACCAC's third place team, Phoenix, at 5:30 p.m. at John D. Riggs Stadium.
