Men's golf grabs two shot lead on first day of Region I championship

  GOLD CANYON, AZ - With all five team members among the top seven on the leaderborad the Mesa men's golf team jumped to a two-shot lead over South Mountain on the first of four days of play at the Region I, Division II Championship Thursday.

  The T-Birds shot a 285 over the Gold Canyon G.C. Sidewinder Course to lead South Mountain which came in at 287. Glendale was third at 310 and Paradise Valley fourth with a 331.

  MCC's Austin Fletcher (So., Memphis, Tenn/Mounatin Pointe (AZ) H.S.) was the co-leader individually with SMCC's Ben Harden, both firing even par 70s.

  One shot back, Mesa's Brandon Carlson (So., Gilbert, AZ/Perry H.S.) was tied for third place with a 71. 

  The other three T-Bird golfers were all knotted at 72: Bryce Melville (Morinville, Alberta/Sturgeon H.S.); T.J. Kathrineberg (Fr., Mesa, AZ/Desert Ridge H.S.) and Alex Trevino (Fr., Gilbert, AZ/Mesquite H.S.).

  The event continues Friday and wraps up Saturday with a berth in the NJCAA Division II National Championship at stake.
