Mesa, AZ - The Mesa Thunderbirds defeated the South Mountain Cougars Saturday night, 63-61, in just the knick of time.
With 1.2 second remaining in the game and tied at 61, Amaury Matthews drained two free-throws to put Mesa ahead for good. It was Matthews who drove the length of the court with seven seconds and drew the South Mountain foul that led to the two free shots.
Matthews finished with 13 points on the night for Mesa and went 4-4 from the free-throw line. Also scoring in double-figures was BJ Burries with 11 points with Carter Coray and Carlos Saucedo each scoring 10 points.
With the win, Mesa moves to 12-7 overall and 8-3 in conference play.
