T-Birds Get Back to Winning Ways with Victory Over Central AZ, 80-72

Mesa, AZ - The Mesa Thunderbirds men's basketball team has experienced a bumpy road these past few weeks but took a step in the right direction with a win over Central Arizona College Saturday night, 80-72.

It took a bit of time early on to get their groove, but Mesa eventually put the right pieces in place.  Being down 19-10 at the 10:49 mark of the first half, buckets by Bryce Cheney, Brent Kimbrel, Obi Megwa and Austin Denham helped Mesa take a 22-20 lead at the seven minute mark.

Jamil Wilson-Jones lead Mesa in the first half with eight points and five rebounds.  Obi Megwa added seven points with two assists and two steals in the first half as well.

It was two Wilson-Jones free-throws at the end of the half that seperated the two teams, Mesa up 34-32.

Not only were those two free-throws the difference in the first half but that was the last time Central would have a lead or even tie the game.

Adonis Arms accounted for seven points, four rebounds and three assists in the second half.  Wilson-Jones added nine more points in the half with Megwa and Kimbrel each pouring in eight points.

Mesa shot a solid 29-53 (54.7 percent) from the field on the night, connecting on five three pointers and adding 17 free-throws.

The T-Birds move to 15-9 overall and 10-7 in the ACCAC.  Mesa currently sits third in the ACCAC DI standings with five games to play in the regular season.  They will be on the road on Wednesday night at Eastern Arizona, then back home on Saturday for a 5 p.m. start against Scottsdale.
