T-Birds Surrender First Half Lead, Fall at Central, 66-63

Coolidge, AZ-In a crucial must win, Mesa couldn't hold onto a first half lead to the Central Arizona Vaqueros and lost, 66-63, down in Coolidge, AZ.

Obi Megwa and Ed Hardt lead the way for the T-Birds in the first half, each scoring six points each with Brandon Dixon had three assists.

Mesa led by as much 13 in the first and went into halftime with a 39-28 lead.

But the second half was a different story as the Vaqueros slowing creeped their way back into the game, cutting the Mesa lead over a 12 minute period and eventually taking the lead at the 8:30 mark.

During this time of the game, went nearly five minutes without making a shot.  Sam Hainline cut the drought with a freethrow shot but the T-Birds just couldn't create any offense.

Luckily for Mesa, Central fell into a funk from the field as well.  At the 4:48 mark, Obi Megwa connected on a three to retake the lead at 57-56.

Central again took the lead at 59-58 but it was again Megwa connecting on a huge three pointer that helped Mesa gain the lead at 61-59 at the 2:25 mark.

With under a minute left in the game, Mesa trailed 62-61, with Nate Jimerson at the line shooting two free throws but failing to make either, Ed Hardt, drapped with two Vaqueros on him, tip in the rebound to give Mesa the 63-62 lead.

A Mesa foul on the other end sent the Vaqueros to the line which lead to Central's final points of the game.

Mesa moves to 11-13 overall and 10-9 in the ACCAC.

The T-Birds will be home this Wednesday for its final home game at 7:30 p.m. against Chandler-Gilbert.
