Late rally lifts Mesa men to 64-60 win over Central Arizona

COOLIDGE, AZ - After surrendering a 12-point lead the Mesa men rallied for a 64-60 victory Wednesday night at Central Arizona.

The win for MCC (9-5, 6-2) was the fifth straight over the Vaqueros (12-4, 6-2) who entered the contest as one of the "others receiving votes" in the NJCAA Division I national poll.

Trailing at halftime, 33-29, Mesa scored the first 11 points of the second half, keyed by a pair of three-pointers by Andrew Jones (So., Portland, Ore/Westview H.S.). The T-Birds kept the run going until the lead reached 12 at 52-40, when Nate Jimerson (Fr., Bullhead City, AZ/Mohave H.S.) hit a three at the 12:03 mark.

But as quickly as MCC built its margin, it entered a stretch of 8:05 in which it scored just two points and found itself trailing, 55-54, with 3:58 to play.

After MCC regained the lead on a bucket by Mitch Burnett (Fr., Phoenix, AZ/Central H.S.), Central countered with a three by Malik Thames.

Another three-pointer by Jones, this time with 1:28 to play, gave Mesa the lead for good, 59-58. Jones then scored on a layup at the 42 second mark, Gianni Dailey (So., Phoenix, AZ/St. Mary's H.S.) added a free throw and Kyle Bingham (Fr., Mesa, AZ/Mountain View H.S.) hit another leaving the Thunderbirds with a 63-58 lead with 11 seconds to play.

Khari Holloway (So., Jackson, Miss/Mountain Pointe (AZ) H.S.) led Mesa with 16 points. He finally missed a free throw in the final three seconds ending a streak of 41 made consecutively. He ranks third in the nation in foul shooting.

Jones finished with 13 points and Dailey scored ten.

The T-Birds go back into action Saturday afternoon at Theo Heap Gym, taking on Chandler-Gilbert at 4:00 p.m.
