T-Birds Roll Through Gauchos, 56-19

Glendale, AZ - Completing a solid victory over Phoenix College in week one, 44-18, the Mesa Thunderbirds football team continued its excellent play Saturday night in a 56-19 victory at Glendale Community College.

Starting a bit slow and sloppy, Mesa refocused and played like the team should.  Driving after a Glendale missed field goal, Mesa's Thomas MacVittie connected with wideout Christion Brewington for a six yard touchdown pass.  The quarter ended with a 7-3 score.

The second half brought a new awakening to the Mesa scoring, as the T-Birds tallied 34 points in the second frame.

Beginning with a 31 yard pass from MacVittie to Shaun Richards to make it a 13-3 game, just three minutes later, MacVittie connected again with Brewington for a 14 yard TD pass.

A Mesa fumble recovery by Jaquan Beaver led to a five yard touchdown run MacVittie, pushing the Mesa lead to 27-3.

Again, the T-Bird defense stepped up with a Gerald Wilbon interception, one of two interceptions on the night for Wilbon.  The next offensive series saw Terrance Roberts scamper in from 10 yards out to push Mesa's lead to 34-3.

To finish off the scoring in the first half for Mesa, it was Trevor Russell who returned a punt 76 yards to the house to make it a 41-3 game.

Mesa wasted little time in the third quarter to score as MacVittie connected with Tylon Patterson down the left side for a 41 yard strike to make it a 48-3 game.

Later on in the third quarter, after the Gauchos had added a touchdown, Mesa punter, Jared Stangler, landed a punt on the Gaucho one yard line.  One play later, Ruben Lebron tackled the Gaucho quick pass two yards in the endzone to record Mesa's first safety of the season, making it 50-10.

With five minutes to play in the third quarter, Thomas MacVittie completed the scoring for Mesa, rushing in from 10 yards out to finalize the 56 point performance by Mesa.

MacVittie on the night had six total touchdowns, four through the air and two on the ground.

Mesa moves to 2-0 on the season and will play at home next Saturday night against the Scottsdale Artichokes at 7 pm.
