#2 Mesa Takes Saturday Game vs Gateway, 6-5, Split Weekend Series with Geckos

Mesa, AZ - The #2 Mesa Thunderbirds won its Saturday game vs the Gateway Geckos, 6-5, splitting the two game weekend series with the Geckos.  The T-Birds dropped a heartbreaker on Friday at Gateway in 12 innings, 8-7.

Down 4-1 in the bottom of the sixth, Mesa put a five spot on the board thanks to some timely hitting and miscues by the Geckos.  Ben Ferguson started the Mesa rally with a double down the right field line followed by a single by Nick Leach.  Both Ferguson and Leach scored on a Sam Low single and with a throwing error, Low was able to reach third base.

Jake Fryer then reached by way of the walk and after a Caleb Lumbard double to right center field, Kaeden Camat-Toki singled in both base runners to  make it a 6-4 game at that point.

Murphy Gienger finished the final out for Mesa, earning the save while Michael Hansell earned the win as he came into the game in the sixth inning and pitched a solid 3.1 innings.  Braxton Bruschke started for Mesa, throwing five innings.

With Mesa getting back in the win column, the T-Birds are now 15-4 overall and 4-4 in conference.  Mesa will play Tuesday at Chandler-Gilbert at 3 pm then Wednesday at Mesa at 3 pm.
