Baseball sweeps GateWay with 7-6 win

MESA, AZ - Mesa fashioned yet another come-from-behind win as it defeated GateWay Saturday to earn a two-game series sweep of the Geckos.

Scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, it was the fourth time in 15 games that MCC (12-3, 8-2) had scored late to secure a win.

Down 6-4, the rally began with one out when Mitchell Morimoto (Fr., Issaquah, Wash/Issaquah H.S.) reached on an error. After a base hit by Jacob Boston (Fr., Spanish Fork, Utah/Spanish Fork H.S.), Morimoto scored on a wild pitch. Chad Leonard (So., Mesa, AZ/Queen Creek H.S.) then walked and James Anderson (So., Henderson, Nev/Coronado H.S.) delivered a two-run single for the winning runs.

The T-Birds opened quickly with a pair of runs in the first. Casey Moses (So. North Las Vegas, Nev/Centnnial H.S.) singled as MCC's first hitter. Alex Gudac (West Jordan, Utah/Juan Diego Catholic H.S.) delivered one of his two tripleS in the game and scored on a Leonard single.

GateWay (7-6, 4-6) scored one in the third and two in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead, but the Thunderbirds rallied with two of their own in the sixth. Danny Lutz (So., Phoenix, AZ/Shadow Mountain H.S.) singled, Jordan Rose (So., Tremonton, Utah/Bear River H.S.) was hit by a pitch and Moses reached on an error.

Garrett Bowman (So., Roy, Utah/Roy H.S.) retired seven straight hitters to gain the victory.

Moses and Boston each had two hits and Gudac was 2-4 with the two triples.

Mesa opens a two-game set with Phoenix on the road Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.
