Hail to the champs! Mesa salutes the baseball national champions
MESA, AZ - When the Mesa baseball team arrived home from Enid, Okla., last May after winning the NJCAA Division II national championship there wasn't much of a fuss on campus. The school was already closed for the semester and not many people were available to salute the champs.
MCC made amends Thursday with a fitting tribute to the national champions as hundreds gathered in the center court.
The T-Birds battled their way back through the losers' bracket with five straight wins and capped the best season in school history with a 9-7, 11 inning, win over Hinds (Miss.).
That meant that MCC had compiled a 52-13 record, the best in the 49-year history of the sport at Mesa.
To make things even sweeter, head coach Tony Cirelli will welcome back quite a few members of that championship squad when the new season opens next year.
