SMCC Women's Basketball Wraps Up 2022-23 Season

The South Mountain Community College women's basketball team (9-20, 3-19 ACCAC) wrapped up its 2022-23 season with road contests at Scottsdale CC and Cochise College and a home tilt against Mesa CC on Sophomore Night. Despite falling in all three games, the Cougars played hard until the final whistle and proudly represented themselves and SMCC with honor throughout the campaign. 

Scottsdale CC Recap 

The Cougars lost 93-55 at Scottsdale CC on Feb. 22, falling behind 55-23 at halftime before rallying to get within 38-32 in the second. SMCC shot 37.9 percent (22-of-58) from the field and had 30 rebounds, 10 assists and five steals.

Sophomore Genesis Adams led SMCC with 12 points and grabbed six rebounds, five of which came on the offensive glass. She added an assist and two steals. 

Sophomore Myla Lee finished with 14 points, seven rebounds and four assists, while freshman Daziane Stevenson scored a season-high 10 points and made two 3-pointers. She added five rebounds and an assist in 25 minutes. 

Sophomore Andrea Willeto posted five points, five rebounds, two assists and three steals, and sophomore Nyakuer Aguek had eight points and five rebounds off the bench. 

Cochise College Recap

Three Cougars finished with 13 points, but the Apaches led 33-22 at the half and closed the game with 34-7 fourth quarter to win 101-46 on Feb. 25 in Douglas, Ariz. SMCC shot 23.2 percent (13-of-56) from the field and finished with 26 rebounds and eight assists. 

Lee had 13 points, three rebounds and an assist, Adams posted 13 points, and a team-high nine rebounds and Willeto finished with 13 points, five rebounds and two assists. 

Freshmen Carmen Kittrell and Kayla Pettet had three rebounds apiece off the bench. 

Mesa CC Recap 

SMCC used a solid second quarter to pull to within 34-28 at halftime, but the Thunderbirds opened the second half with a 13-3 run en route to a 76-60 victory at the SMCC Gym on Feb. 28. SMCC shot 32.1 percent (18-of-56) from the field and finished with 33 rebounds, 11 assists, eight steals, and two blocks. 

Adams led SMCC with 22 points and tied for the team lead with six rebounds. She added an assist and a steal. Lee also had six rebounds and posted 21 points, three assists, four steals and a block. 

Willeto scored 10 points, hitting a pair of 3-pointers, with five rebounds, two assists and three steals. Stevenson came off the bench to finish with two points, three rebounds, and three assists.
