SMCC Baseball Wins Pair over Mesa CC in ACCAC Action

The South Mountain Community College baseball team (32-12, 24-4 ACCAC) defeated Mesa Community College 10-6 on April 1 and 10-2 (8 innings) on April 2 in a pair of ACCAC Division II contests. Sophomore Marcus Romero hit two home runs, and freshman Gavin Short had four RBIs to help lead the Cougars to the victory on April Fool's Day. The next day, sophomore Luke Jones homered, sophomore Landon Springmeyer collected a triple, and Romero doubled to post the win over the Thunderbirds. 

April 1 Recap

The Cougars jumped out to an early lead and never trailed in posting the 10-6 victory. The Cougars scored a run in the first, three in the third, and one in the fourth, fifth, and sixth to take a 7-3 lead. After the Thunderbirds scored twice in the eighth, SMCC plated three insurance runs in their half of the frame to seal the victory. 

With one out in the first, sophomore Joe Terranova drew a walk and scored all the way from first when Raul Parada's single to left resulted in an error. 

In the second, Short cleared the bases with a two-out, three-run triple to right that scored freshman Bryan Lorenz, freshman Drew Johnson, and Jones.

Romero led off the fourth with a solo home run, his second of the year, and Short added a two-out RBI single to score Lorenz in the fifth. In the sixth, Romero scored on an RBI single from freshman Bobby Pierce Jr

Romero hit another solo home run to start the eighth, and Parada smacked a two-run double that brought in Pierce Jr. and Terranova. 

Romero finished 2 for 3 with three runs, two RBIs, two home runs, and a stolen base, while Short was 2 for 3 with four RBIs, a triple, and a walk. Parada was 2 for 5 with two RBIs and a double, and Lorenz was 2 for 4 with two runs and a walk. Pierce Jr. also had two hits and finished with a double, a run, an RBI, and a walk. 

Freshman Lukas Geisler earned the win to improve to 6-1 on the season with 5.2 innings of work. He allowed eight hits and three earned runs to go with five strikeouts. Freshman Robert Whitaker tossed 1.1 innings of relief with two strikeouts and one earned run.

Freshman Braeden McCarroll also tossed 1.1 innings of relief, and sophomore Matt Elliot recorded his fifth save of the season by getting the final two outs. 

April 2 Recap

SMCC kept the offense rolling in game two of the series in a 10-2, eight-inning road victory. The Thunderbirds pushed a run across in the first, but the Cougars answered immediately with four runs in the second. MCC got one back in the third, but SMCC responded with three in the fourth. The Cougars then closed out the game with one in the seventh and two in the eighth. 

Sophomore Luis Martin Romero earned the win by tossing six innings to improve to 6-0 on the year. He allowed five hits, one earned run, and one walk to go with three strikeouts. Sophomores Jack Cecil and Christopher Mata each threw an inning of relief with a strikeout. 

Jones was 1 for 2 with three runs, two walks, and a two-run home run in the eighth that brought in Johnson. Pierce Jr. was 1 for 2 with three walks, two RBIs, and a run, while Springmeyer was 1 for 3 with a run, two RBIs, a walk, and a two-run triple in the second to put SMCC ahead 2-1. 

Romero doubled, walked, and scored twice, while Johnson walked twice, scored once, and had an RBI sacrifice fly in the fourth.
