Aztecs softball gets swept at Mesa CC

The Pima Community College softball team (27-9, 22-8 in ACCAC) dropped two conference games on the road on Saturday at Mesa Community College.

The No. 7 ranked Aztecs had 29 hits on the day but struggled as they stranded 27 runners on base. Araceli Peralta (Tucson Magnet HS) finished the day 6 for 8 with three runs scored, two walks and a triple. Kalynn Martinez (Sunnyside HS) was 6 for 9 with an RBI and a run scored. Sierra Cuestas went 4 for 6 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Game 1: Mesa CC Thunderbirds 9, Pima CC Aztecs 5

The Aztecs surrendered four runs in the 5th inning in their 9-5 loss in the first game. They had trouble bringing in runs as they stranded 13 for the game. Alexis Ayala (Sunnyside HS) went 2 for 4 with an RBI while Keona Hunter (Santa Rita HS) finished 2 for 4 with a run scored and a double. Martinez finished the game 3 for 5 with a run scored while Peralta also went 3 for 5. Cuestas was 2 for 4 and Christine Olivas (Hamilton HS) was 1 for 3 with a run scored.

Alexis Alfonso (Canyon del Oro HS) struggled on the mound as she took the loss (15-3). She gave up eight runs (eight earned) on 11 hits with three walks.

Game 2: Mesa CC Thunderbirds 10, Pima CC Aztecs 8

The Aztecs rally was halted in the 7th inning as they scored two runs but fell 10-8 in the second game. Pima stranded 14 runners on base. Alfonso hit a solo home run in the 6th inning as she finished 3 for 5 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Peralta finished 3 for 3 with three runs scored, two walks and a triple. Cuestas went 2 for 2 with two RBIs and a run scored while Martinez was 3 for 4 with an RBI.

Odalis Orduno (Desert View HS) took the loss (8-4) as she gave up 10 runs (eight earned) on 14 hits with one strikeout and two walks.

The Aztecs will be back on the road on Tuesday when they play an ACCAC Conference doubleheader against Glendale Community College. The games will be at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.
