Aztecs Women's Tennis Gets Shut Out at Mesa CC
The Pima Community College women's tennis team (9-4, 4-2 in ACCAC) had its three match winning streak snapped on Thursday at Mesa Community College.
The No. 22 ranked Aztecs were shut out against the No. 12 ranked Thunderbirds 9-0.
Freshman Kelsey Brown (Ironwood Ridge HS) made it tough in the first set of her No. 1 singles match but fell against Emily De La Silva Chang 7-6, 6-2. Fellow freshman Samantha Ruth (Catalina Foothills HS) dropped her No. 2 singles match against Khanh Huynh 6-1, 6-1. Brown and Ruth stayed close but lost to De La Silva Chang and Huynh 8-5 at No. 1 doubles.
Sophomore Noelle Karp (Catalina Foothills HS) played a tough first set but had to retire against Yolena Carlon in her No. 3 singles match. She lost 6-4, 1-0 (retire). Fellow sophomore Ema Hernandez (Sunnyside HS) lost in her No. 5 singles match 6-2, 6-3. The No. 2 doubles duo of Karp and Hernandez fell 8-2.
Sophomore Stephanie Nickles (Ironwood Ridge HS) dropped her No. 4 singles match to Hanna Nelson 6-3, 6-1 while freshman Fernanda Miller (Nogales HS) fell at No. 6 singles against Julia Ortiz 6-2, 6-2. Nickles and Miller lost their No. 3 doubles match to Nelson and Ortiz 8-2.
The Aztecs will look to bounce back when they host Glendale Community College at the Tucson Racquet Club on Thursday at 1:30 p.m.
