PUMAS STRUGGLE AGAINST MESA

Game 1: MCC 11, PVCC 1

Pumas Lose Lead Early in Defeat

The Pumas fell behind early and couldn't come back in an 11-1 loss to the Thunderbirds on Saturday. Mesa took the lead on a fielder's choice in the first inning.

The Pumas struggled to contain the high-powered offense of MCC, giving up 11 runs.

Colby Davis started the game for the Pumas. Davis allowed seven hits and seven runs over four innings, striking out one. Michael Modrick threw one and two-thirds innings out of the bullpen.

Noah Burgarello and Derek Wood each managed one hit for the Pumas.

Game 2: MCC 15, PVCC 14

Pumas Stay Competitive but are Bested by Mesa

Even though the Pumas and Thunderbirds both had their opportunities, it was MCC that eventually prevailed 15-14 on Saturday.

Down 2-0, the Pumas captured the lead in the second inning when Noah Burgarello grounded out, scoring two runs, putting the Pumas up 4-2.

Trailing the TBirds 6-4, the Pumas tallied nine runs in the fifth inning. The big inning was thanks to singles by Larry Ross and Burgarello, doubles by Jager Straub and Anthoine Shell, and a sacrifice fly by Isaac George. Add to that a dinger by CJ Molina.  MCC answered by putting up seven in the bottom of the fifth, tying the score 13-13.

Having scored one each in the seventh, the game was tied at 14 with MCC batting in the bottom of the eighth when Danny Carpenter induced the Thunderbirds' #20 to hit into a fielder's choice, one run scored.

Jonathan Hyman was on the hill for the Pumas. The pitcher allowed two hits and four runs over three innings, striking out two. Brady Welch, Zach Rogers, Carpenter, and Logan Birch each entered the game in relief, throwing two innings, one & one-third innings, one inning, and two-thirds of an inning respectively.

The Pumas lost despite out-hitting Mesa 13 to 11. Molina, Anthony Marcon, and Shell each collected three hits to lead the Pumas.
