Arizona Western Softball pushes winning streak to five games with sweep of Mesa

YUMA, Ariz. –  The Arizona Western College Lady Matadors Softball team (21-11, 13-3) pushed its winning streak to five games with a doubleheader sweep of Mesa (2-16, 1-13) on Saturday afternoon in Mesa, winning game one 24-3 and taking the second game 17-6.

Mollie Forbes homered twice and drove in five runs in the opener while Jessie Garcia smashed her second grand slam of the week.

Arizona Western opened the scoring in the first inning, scoring three runs and another run in the second inning. The Lady Matadors opened the game up in the fourth inning, scoring six runs highlighted by a Forbes three-run homer.

The Lady Matadors had their biggest inning of the season in the fifth, scoring 14 runs, highlighted by a grand slam from Garcia and followed by Forbes' second homer of the game, going back-to-back.

Kaity McLaughlin had three hits including a double and triple while driving in three runs while Forbes homered and doubled in the 17-6 game two win.

Just like in game one, the Lady Matadors scored three runs in the first inning with Forbes driving in two of the runs with a single. After adding a run in the second inning, the Lady Matadors scored eight runs in the third, three of which came on a Kaity McLaughlin bases-loaded triple.

Mesa got three runs back in the bottom of the fourth inning before the Lady Matadors scored four more runs in the fifth to finish off the scoring.

The Lady Matadors return home on Tuesday, April 2, hosting Yavapai in an ACCAC doubleheader beginning at 11:00 am at Charlie Dine Softball Field.
