Roberts' walk-off single gives Matadors the sweep of Mesa

YUMA, Ariz. – Arizona Western Baseball (20-7, 13-5) extended its winning streak to six games on Tuesday afternoon, sweeping Mesa (15-22, 3-19), winning game one 8-5 before sneaking past the Thunderbirds in game two, 9-8 at Walt Kammann Baseball Field.

The Matadors erased a four-run deficit and scored eight of the final nine runs of the game to come from behind and take the opener 8-5.

Jared Davis went 3-for-5 with three runs batted in, hammering his first home run of the season. The Matadors scored four runs in the fifth inning to take an 8-4 lead with the big hit coming from Noah Roberts who drove in a pair with a two-run single to put the Matadors in front.

Robert Miranda went 3-for-3 in game one while both Oskar Stark, Marcus Graham, and Joe Zhu each picked up two hits in the win.

Bobby Lane earned the win out of the bullpen while Roland Marte tossed two scoreless innings to notch the save.

Roberts gave the Matadors a sweep in game two of the doubleheader with a walk-off single on a line drive single into center field with the bases loaded to give the Matadors a 9-8 win after Mesa tied the game with a three-run homer in the top half of the ninth inning.

The Matadors trailed 2-1 entering the third inning when Arizona Western sent nine batters to the plate, scoring four runs, two of which were driven in on a single from Wesley Estrella.

Tyler LeRoy finished the game 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI while Miranda singled twice and drove in a run with a bases loaded walk.

With the walk-off single, Roberts finished the game 3-for-5 with a double and two runs batted in and two runs scored.

The Matadors head out on the road on Saturday, April 1, heading to Glendale to face the Gauchos in a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 pm.
