Aztecs women's drop conference match against Mesa CC

The Pima Community College women's tennis team (1-2, 0-2 in ACCAC) was shut out in its ACCAC conference match on Thursday against Mesa Community College.

The Aztecs lost 9-0 to the No. 8 ranked Thunderbirds at the West Campus Tennis Courts.

Freshmen Emma Oropeza (Nogales HS) and Janine Fernando (Sabino HS) fell at No. 1 doubles to Khanh Huynh and Naa Ankrah 8-2. Oropeza dropped her No. 1 singles match to Huynh 6-2, 6-3 while Fernando lost a tough match to Ankrah 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 singles.

At No. 2 doubles, freshman Lien Nguyen and sophomore Dana Pineda (University HS) were shut out by Yolena Carlon and Julia Ortiz 8-0. Nguyen lost her No. 3 singles match to Carlon 6-0, 6-2. Sophomore Ashley Ochoa (Tucson HS) played a tight second set but came up short against Ortiz 6-1, 7-5 at No. 4 singles.

Freshmen Jayme Shafer (Tucson HS) and Elise Rodriguez (Flowing Wells HS) dropped their No. 3 doubles match to Hannah Nelson and Michelle Fournier 8-1. Shafer was blanked in her No. 5 singles match 6-0, 6-0 against Nelson while Rodriguez fell at No. 6 singles to Charlotte Slater 6-2, 6-4.

The Aztecs will play a non-conference match against the New Mexico Military Institute on Saturday in Mesa, AZ. The match begins at 2:00 p.m.
