3-0 Sweep for #16 Mesa Over Phoenix College Friday Night

Mesa, AZ - It was a nice way to finish a good week for the #16 Mesa Thunderbirds as they took down #9 Glendale on Wednesday in five sets and defeated the Phoenix College Bears Friday night in straight sets, 25-19, 26-24, 25-17.

Mesa started quickly in set one, jumping out to an 11-3 advantage.  PC was able to get some of those points back but Mesa never let them get any closer than four points as the T-Birds took a 20-14 lead, eventually taking the set at 25-19.

It was a bit tougher to separate from the Bears in set two, as each team stayed close throughout.  Tied at 13 however, Phoenix College rallied off three points to force a Mesa timeout.  It was then the T-Birds turn to rally off some points as they went on a 7-2 run to take the lead, 20-18.  PC would tie it at 20 though and continue to tie through point 24, where Mesa scored the last two points of the set, the last coming off an ace from Rachel Graff.

Set three belong solely to the T-Birds as they jumped out quickly like set one to a 10-3 lead.  Mesa would maintain a large margin throughout and win the set, 25-17.

On the night, three T-Birds finished with eight kills (Raquel Valliere, Paige Greenly, and Cambria Whiting) while Valliere had two block assists and Whiting had 10 digs.

"The girls did a great job of playing aggressive from start to finish," said Head Coach Megan Taylor, "We have been challenging them to make in-game adjustments and do their job on the court consistently.  That has been a big part of our success."

Mesa will head into their final week of the season with two matches left.  The first will be on Wednesday against Grand Canyon Club, the home regular season finale, which is also going to be sophomore night.  Then the T-Birds will play at Pima on Friday night in the regular season finale, each match starting at 7 pm.

As of now, Mesa is sitting tied with Scottsdale with a 9-5 conference record for the top spot in the ACCAC DII tournament.  Final results and seedings will not be determined till next Friday.  The conference tournament will be hosted by the team who finishes as the #1 seed and will be played on November 2-4.  Check back for further details.
