#13 Mesa Takes Down Eastern AZ in Four Sets

Mesa, AZ - The #13 Mesa Thunderbirds defeated the Eastern Arizona Gila Monsters Wednesday night in four sets, 25-23, 16-25, 26-24, 25-23.

In front of a ruckus Theo Heap Gym crowd, the T-Birds took set one by outscoring the Gila Monsters 7-5 in the final points to win 25-23.

Set two belong solely to the Gila Monsters, taking a quick 15-8 lead and finishing off the set at 25-16.

Mesa however buckled down and played with composer because in set three, they fell down 22-18.  After a Mesa timeout, the T-Birds rallied off five points to eventually tie the set at 23.  The set then tied at 24 but it was Mesa who closed out the set with a 26-24 win.  

"The girls did a great job performing under pressure," said Head Coach Megan Taylor.

In the fourth set, Mesa held the lead throughout the first few points, at one point having a 15-9 advantage.  The Gila Monsters put together a rally themselves and eventually tied the match at 18.  Mesa would take the next two points but Eastern would again tie it at 21.  After exchanging tie's til point 23, Mesa put away the final two points to win the match.

"Eastern has great hitters and we knew we would have to be more offensive in order to compete with them," said Coach Taylor, "We had a few hitters reach double digit kills which was important in our success tonight."

Cambria Whiting finished with a double-double for the T-Birds, with 11 kills and 12 digs while Raquel Valliere had 10 kills, four digs and one solo block.

Mesa moves to 15-7 overall with a 7-4 conference record.  They will be on the road on Friday night at Arizona Western with a start time of 7 pm.
