South Mountain Takes Down #10 Mesa in Five Sets

Mesa, AZ - The #10 Mesa Thunderbirds played another exciting five set match Friday night but ended up on the wrong side of victory as the South Mountain Cougars defeated the T-Birds in five sets, 25-22, 22-25, 16-25, 25-20, 9-15.

Mesa took set one as both teams played evenly till the final points when the T-Birds finished on a 4-2 run to complete the set, 25-22.  In set two, each team stayed even with each other till South Mountain broke away when the set was tied at 19.  The Cougars went on a 6-3 run to finish the set, 25-22.

It was all Cougars in set three as Mesa couldn't get on the same page, as South easily earned the set, 25-16.

South Mountain continued its momentum into set four as the Cougars jumped out to a 15-10 advantage.  Mesa bounced back though, rallying to tie the set at 19 and from there, the T-Birds seized the set.  From 15-10, Mesa went on a 15-5 run to win the set, 25-20, with the finishing touch coming from a service ace by Jess Perry to get point 25.

In the final set, the score remain close till point nine, when South scored six straight points to win the set and match, 15-9.  

Leah Crist finished with 14 kills on the night, five block solo's and five block assists.  Camy Cohn finished with a team high 32 digs.

The T-Birds will be right back in action tomorrow afternoon when they host Highland Community College at 3 pm.
