T-Birds Volleyball Take Down #12 South Mountain in Four Sets

Mesa, AZ - The Mesa Thunderbirds volleyball team upended the #12 South Mountain Cougars Wednesday night in four sets, 25-12, 19-25, 25-23, 25-21.

For Mesa, this is the second ranked opponent they have beaten this season, defeating Yavapai on opening night at Theo Heap Gym.

The T-Birds took control early in set one, with a 16-10 adavantage, they rallied off seven straight points to push their lead to 23-10.  They closed out the set at 25-12.

In the second set, South Mountain jumped out to a 7-2 advantage and consistently held to a five point lead throughout the set, with the Cougars winning the second set, 25-19.

It was the same flow heading into set three for the Cougars as they quickly started 3-0 and had a 10-5 advantage but Mesa Head Coach Megan Taylor called timeout and rallied her squad.  Mesa tied the set up at 12 and eventually took the lead at 15-14.

Both teams then exchanged points before Mesa rattled off three straight points to take a 20-17 lead.  Mesa held tight to win the set, 25-23.

The fourth set began with both teams swapping points until 5-5 when Mesa went on 5-1 run to force the Cougars to take a timeout at 10-6.  From there on out, Mesa kept steady their lead and took the match on a service ave from Paige Greenly.

Mesa avenges the loss they had to South Mountain just five days ago at the Scottsdale Invite where the Cougars defeated the T-Birds in four sets.

The T-Birds move to 6-3 on the season, 3-1 in the ACCAC.  They will be right back at it against another ACCAC opponent on Friday as the Phoenix College Bears come to Theo Heap Gym for a 7 p.m. start time.
