Benedictine JV Handles Mesa in Four Sets, 3-1

Christina Pociask

Mesa, AZ - The Lady T-Birds started the evening with a 2-1 record but ended it 2-2 as they lost to Benedictine University JV in four sets, 25-22, 25-19, 25-18, 25-19.

Set one was close nearly the whole way through.  Neither team ever held more than a two or three point lead.

Paige Greenly killed an over pass, breaking a tie and putting the T- Birds at 17-16.  With a score of 24-21, BenU coach calls back to back time outs. The T-Birds won the set one, 25- 22.

Set two began a little rocky but the T-birds held their own.  Powerhouse hitter, Breanna Scott, helped her team earn a three point lead with numerous kills.

Mesa coach, Megan Taylor, called a timeout at 23-19, but the Birds couldn't snag the side-out needed to win that set.  BenU won set two 25-19.

An excellently placed tip by Leah Crist gave Mesa their momentum back, taking the third set lead at 11-9.

But they couldn't hold it for very long as BenU went on to get a six point lead and then some.  The T-Birds lost set three 25-18.

The T-Birds fought to defend their home court but had some difficulties getting full control of the match.

They were down 13-7 when Coach Taylor called a time-out.

Raquel Valliere killed the ball in the center of court allowing Mesa to finally side out.

Jaida Jackson Campbell hit the ball through the seam and scored the point that began a string of points putting Mesa back into the set.  A kill and solo block by Megan Block shrunk the deficit to only two points 18-16.  But BenU ended up taking set three, 25-19.

The Lady T-Birds will be competing in the Scottsdale Community College Classic Tournament this weekend
