Volleyball announces first three signings for 2014

MESA, AZ – First-year coach Matthew Werle has signed his initial three recruits for Mesa volleyball for the 2014 season.

Setter Casey Reid, of Apache Junction H.S., outside hitter Lauren Palmer, from Gilbert H.S. and outside hitter Malicabeth Weigele, who played at Shadow Mountain H.S., in Phoenix, are the first three to join Werle as he rebuilds a once-outstanding program.

"These three athletes are setting the expectations high for next season," Says Werle . "Their work ethic and skill will attract future players.  They will help in building the foundation for success next year and years to come."

"It makes all too much sense that the first to sign is a setter because my playing background is setting," notes Werle of Reid. "Casey comes from an outstanding family with a strong athletic history.  Her work ethic on and off the court, will be contagious.  I am genuinely excited to work with Casey next season!"

Palmer arrives from Gilbert H.S., which had an outstanding season in 2013 with a 31-11 record.

"Her knowledge of the game is beyond her years.  She is versatile and will find a way on the court one way or another.  Lauren will be a vital piece in turning MCC Volleyball around," according to Werle.

Weigele was originally recruited to play in Texas, but found it was not the best fit. Currently attending Paradise Valley C.C., she realized she still had a tremendous desire to play volleyball.

According to Wrele,  "Her passion for the sport of volleyball is highlighted by the simple fact that she could not be more excited to come be a Thunderbird.  She is also heavily involved in coaching girls club volleyball."

Werle plans to announce further signings in the near future.
