Rough day for Mesa women at NJCAA tennis nationals

  Tyler, Texas – After a solid start Sunday, things turned sour for the MCC women Monday at the NJCAA Division I National Championship.

  The T-Birds lost all six of their winners' bracket matches, mostly against seeded opponents. Mesa is currently in 16th place with 13 points.

  Mesa had won in four of the six singles flights, but lost in the second round in all four.  Ana Villalvazo fell to top-seeded Maria Genovese of Tyler, 0-6, 0-6, at  No. 1; Paige Stanford lost to sixth-seeded Alena Macherova of Seward Co., 2-6, 0-6, at No. 3; Brooke Maclay was beaten by the No. 5 seed Guillia Leall, Broward, of Broward, 0-6, 0-6 at No. 5 and Alahazy Rissi dropped a 4-6, 1-6 decision to Kaitlyn Williams, Snead State at No. 6.

  In doubles MCC dropped its two winners' bracket matches. Anders and Stanford lost to sixth-seeded Vanessa Cozamanis and Giulli Leall of Broward, 1-6, 5-7, at No. 2 and Maclay and Rossi fell to the number four seeds, Margot Fontaine-Coraline Lamer of Cowley, 0-6, 2-6, in the No. 3 match.

  Things went better for the T-Birds in the consolation matches. Anders won, 8-2, over Pima's Valeria Miranda and Sanchez and Villalvazo took the No. 1 doubles match from Nicole Barron and Haley Putman of Wallace State, 9-7. In No. 2 singles Sanchez lost to Ariadna Jordan of Jones Co., 6-8.

  The consolation winners will continue play Tuesday.
