Despite top effort, women's tennis falls to NCAA DII Dixie St., 5-4
St. George, Utah – Despite possibly its best effort of the year according to head coach Adam Cohen, the Mesa women's tennis team saw its 12-match winning streak halted by NCAA Division II Dixie St. Saturday, 5-4.
"Out of all of our matches this year, this was our best," noted Cohen. "Our women were thrown into some tough conditions; An eight-hour road trip to Dixie in St. George Utah and playing against a really solid NCAA D2 school.
"Our women showed the fruits of what we have been working so hard for in doubles. Unfortunately we were unable to seal the team win in singles but we fought to the end. Setting aside our #1 doubles beating a very strong NCAA #1 doubles team, our #2 doubles winning 8-0 against a very strong NCAA #2 doubles team, Hanna Nelson winning 6-2, 6-0, the biggest stand out for me this match was Michelle Fournier. Not only was she playing the best doubles of her season, she lost her first set 2-6 and understood she needed to fight back in order to keep our team in the match. Under pressure in all of the conditions she used to have issues with like the wind, she got the job done.
"But, Dixie was a great team and they pulled it out. I am very confident that if our girls push hard to fix some things, we will go into regionals and hopefully nationals looking to do something kind of cool."
Now 12-4 on the year, the T-Birds will return to ACCAC play Tuesday hosting Glendale at 1:30 p.m.
