Women's tennis wins, men fall, against NCAA DII Western New Mexico
Mesa, AZ – In a reversal of results of a match the Mesa tennis teams played in January against NCAA Division II Western New Mexico, the T-Bird women won 7-2 while the men fell, 5-3, Thursday on the MCC courts.
On Jan. 28 the Mesa men took a 5-4 decision while the women fell, 7-2.
"Our women played the best doubles I've seen any Mesa women's team play," said head coach Adam Cohen. "Winning all three doubles gave us great momentum to finish up with a win at 7-2."
Mesa's No. 1 doubles team of Naa Ankrah and Khan Huynh won. 8-3; the No. 2 team of Yolanda Carlon and Julia Ortiz took an 8-2 victory and the No. 3 squad of Michelle Fournier and Hanna Nelson were 8-4 victors.
"Our guys played hard and left it all on the court, just came a little short," noted Cohen. "WNMU is very good and it was about as close as it can get."
For the T-Birds, 14th-ranked David Felix topped NCAA DII No. 14 Liam Fraboulet, 7-6, 4-6, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and Eduardo Cuoto defeated Zachary Grabovic, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6.
In addition, MCC's No. 3 doubles team of Cuoto and Matt Fisher won, 8-5.
Both teams will host the ACCAC Pre-season Jamboree Friday on the Mesa courts.
