Mesa Tennis Recap From Friday and Saturday

FRIDAY

Mesa, AZ – Back at home after a trip to New Mexico, the Mesa women's tennis team dropped a 6-3 decision to NCAA Division III Gustavus-Adolphus Thursday.  

"We didn't show up to play, I'm very disappointed in our performance," said head coach Adam Cohen.  

"Gustavus played great, and well coached and well disciplined. They earned the win and we deserved the loss."  

G-A swept the doubles, but MCC took the top three singles matches. Naa Ankrah won at No. 1 6-3, 6-3, Tolena Carlon at No. 2, 6-0, 6-3 and Khanh Huyah at No. 3, 6-1, 6-1.

SATURDAY

In a home doubleheader, the Mesa men's and women's tennis teams both recorded shutouts, defeating Imperial Valley (Calif.), 9-0 each Friday.  

For the seventh-ranked men it was an easy win, with MCC losing only a total of three games in the 15 sets played.  

Linus Holthey, ranked No. 31 in the nation, took a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles over Robert Verhofstadt.  

The women bounced back from a loss Thursday to capture their first victory of the season, 9-0.

The Mesa men will face probably their toughest test of the year when they travel to meet the University of Arizona Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
