Matadors rain on women's soccer home opener

Mesa, AZ - Though leading at halftime 2-1, Mesa women's soccer fell to the Matadors of Arizona Western, 5-4, in overtime.

Mesa looked strong to start the game, scoring the first two goals and out hustling the Matadors to every pass.  The first T-Bird goal came from Victoria McClelland(So., Colorado Springs, CO, Gilbert H.S.) who kicked in a nice pass from Jessica Lynn(So., Queen Creek, AZ, Queen Creek H.S.).

Lynn was then the scorer on Mesa's second goal as she then received a beautiful no look heal kick pass from McClelland, with Lynn beating two Matador defenders.  That goal came at the 31:07 mark of the first half and pushed Mesa's lead to 2-0.

Right before half, Arizona Western cut the lead in half with a goal of their own, cutting the score to 2-1.  As the second half began, a major monsoon storm came right over John D. Riggs Stadium, with dust, rain and lightning, prompting both teams trainers to stop the game due to lightning. After about a 45 minute delay, both teams came back onto a very wet, slippery field.

The Matadors eventually took the lead halfway through the half. But Mesa rallied back, scoring on a penalty by Mackenzie Brown(Fr., Flagstaff, AZ, Coconino H.S.) at the 9:51 mark.  But another Matador goal gave Western the lead right back but in the closing minutes, it was Victoria McClelland again coming up big for Mesa, chip shotting a goal from the left side, right over the head of the goalkeeper, to tie the game back up at four and that's how the regulation time ended.

Six minutes into the overtime, the Matadors converted a free kick to take down the T-Birds on their home game opener.

Mesa now moves to 1-1 on the season, and will play home on Saturday against Cochise College.
