MESA, AZ - A tight defensive struggle came down to one overtime shot by Cochise's Taylor Kruse just 48 seconds into the second extra period giving the Apaches a 1-0 win over Mesa in women's soccer Thursday night at John D. Riggs Stadium.
The teams had waged a tremendous battle through the first 100 minutes until Kruse took a pass about ten yards out and had a one-on-one opportunity against MCC goalkeeper Danielle Torres (So., Yuma, AZ/Kofa HS.) and put it in the left corner of the net.
The T-Birds had a good chance in the first OT when Monique Moore (So.,Chandler, AZ/Hamilton H.S.) managed to slip a shot past a diving Cochise goalkeeper Diana Medrano, who had charged just outside the penalty area, but Moore's shot barely missed the near post.
Mesa is now 5-4-4 in its quest to earn a Region I playoff berth. The Apaches have a 7-3-1 record.
MCC returns to John D. Riggs Stadium Saturday to host GateWay in an 8:00 p.m. game.
