Women's golf surges to 22 shot win at Scottsdale Invitational

  Sun City, AZ – The Mesa women's golf team put together its best round of the year and held off a challenge from Pima to win the Scottsdale Invitational Tuesday at the Hillcrest Golf Club.

  Led by Haley Kapanicas who tied for medal honors with PCC's Desiree Hong, the T-Birds shot a 324 for a two-day total of 667 to win by 21 strokes. Pima, which sat just one stroke off the lead after Monday's round, recorded a 345 and a 689 total.

  The win was MCC's 71st consecutive ACCAC tournament victory.

  Kapanicas and Hong each had identical six-under-par 69-69—138 totals, 16 shots better than anyone else in the field.

  Mesa also had the fourth and fifth place finishers with Madison Tjaden taking fourth place at 84-78—152 and Megan Fusak placing fifth with an 83-85—168. Cheyenne Stewart tied for 12th place at 107-92—199.

    MCC will next play in the Estrella Mountain Invitational Feb. 27-28.
