DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The fifth-ranked Mesa women's golf team opens play today in the NJCAA National Championship on the LPGA International G.C. Hills Course.

The T-Birds had placed among the top ten in the event for 12 straight years until last season when an injury and a disqualification knocked them out of contention. MCC appeared headed toward a top five finish at the time.

Mesa dominated Region I play this year, winning most events by anywhere from about 60 to 120 shots, but will face some stiff competition at nationals from NJCAA Division I schools.

Host Daytona State is ranked number one in the nation, followed by Seminole (Fla.,) State, Redlands (Okla.) and McLennan (Texas).

For the T-Birds, Charatta Thongbai (Fr., Gilbert, AZ/Dobson H.S.) is ranked 20th individually and Jacqualyn Porman (Fr., Gilbert, AZ/Chander H.S.) is 29th.

Coverage of the event can be found at the website above, as well as daily on the MCC athletic site.
