T-Birds Clinch #1 Seed, Taliman Records Triple-Double as Mesa Celebrates Sophomore Night Victory Over CGCC

Mesa, AZ - What a day for the Mesa Thunderbirds women's basketball team as they clinched the #1 for the Region I - ACCAC DII tournament with a convincing 81-54 over Chandler-Gilbert Saturday afternoon.

Freshman Myka Taliman wanted to do something special for the sophomores on their sophomore day so she recorded a triple-double, scoring 11 points, dishing out 10 assists and pulling down 10 rebounds.  The last triple-double recorded by a Mesa women's basketball player was Peace Amukamara in the semi-final game of the NJCAA tournament in 2014.  Mesa ended up winning the National Championship that season.

Also having a big day for Mesa was Zyan Smith, who scored 14 points and Jacey Salabiye, who scored 12 points.  Stacey Begay came off the bench and gave Mesa 10 points.

The T-Birds took an astounding 83 shots on the afternoon, connecting on 36 (43.4%).

With the win, Mesa moves to 19-9 overall on the season and 16-5 in conference play.  With clinching the #1 seed, Mesa will host throughout the playoffs that begin on Wednesday, March 4th at 7 pm.  If they win, they will host the championship game at Theo Heap Gym on Saturday, March 7th at 7 pm.
