7th Annual American Indian Recognition Day Scheduled for November 20th at Theo Heap Gym

Mesa, AZ – Mesa Thunderbird Athletics and the American Indian Institute are pleased to announce the date of their 7th Annual American Indian Recognition Day basketball game – Wednesday, November 20, 2019. The Thunderbirds will take on the Tohono O’odham Community College (TOCC) Jegos at home in the Theo Heap Gymnasium. Tipoff for the women’s game will be at 5:30 pm and 7:30 pm for the men’s game.

Red t-shirts to raise awareness about missing, murdered indigenous women will also be given away at the game as MCC is educating about this national crisis during the month of November. Halftime honorees will be newly inducted MCC Hall of Famer and Distinguished Staff Recipient, Garrison Tahmahkera (retired) and newly crowned Miss Indian Arizona and current MCC student, Audri Mitchell. Additionally, this years’ men’s and women’s basketball teams have players representing the San Carlos Apache Nation, Three Affiliated Tribes, and the Navajo Nation. The Thunderbird teams will once again be wearing turquoise and red Nike N7 uniforms that represent harmony, family, and friendship. Last year MCC became the first two-year college to have the distinction of wearing these special Nike uniforms.

Entertainment will be provided by Indigenous Enterprises, a Phoenix-based group of native performers who will present electrifying pow wow dancing during halftime as well. So come out and support Mesa Thunderbird Basketball!
