Mesa, AZ - With a 14 point victory Friday night, the #4 Mesa Thunderbirds finally notched its first win of the season, 86-72, over the Cardinals of North Idaho College.
Leading the way for the Thunderbirds was sophomore point guard, Cheyenne Begay, who registered a double-double, scoring 24 points to go along with 10 assists. Coming off her ACCAC DII Player of the Week honor, sophomore Diamond Fuller also contributed a double-double, scoring 18 points while pulling down 12 rebounds.
The T-Birds however trailed at halftime, 30-29, but a dominate last couple minutes of the third quarter that continued into the fourth quarter helped Mesa propel to its first win of the season. The T-Birds outscored the Cardinals 37-25 in the fourth quarter alone, Begay leading the charge with 11 points and six assists alone in the quarter.
All-in-all, every Mesa player scored on the night as the T-Birds shot 45.7 percent (32-70) from the field while connecting on seven three-pointers on the night.
Mesa will be back in action next Tuesday night at home when they face an ACCAC opponent in the Tohono O'odham Jegos, beginning at 5:30 pm.
