Mesa Women Take Down #3 Pima, 78-64, Draining 13 Three-Pointers

Mesa, AZ - A baker's dozen.  That's how many three-pointers the Mesa Thunderbirds women's basketball team knock down to defeat the #3 ranked Pima Aztecs Wednesday night at Theo Heap Gym, 78-64.

Mesa was shooting unconsciously as they would go multiple possession connecting on three-pointers, shooting 54.2 (13-24) percent from three on the night.

It was a close match throughout the first quarter until the last couple minutes, when Mesa was able to take an eight point lead, 18-10.  However, the Aztecs would score the final six points of the quarter to finish the frame, 18-16.

The second quarter saw some hot shooting from Cheyane Begay, as she connected on all three of her three pointers as she finished with 10 points alone in the quarter.  It was also during the second quarter that Pima held two different leads, each just one point leads.  But after the T-Birds took the lead at 29-27 at the 4:44 mark, Mesa would never again reliquish their lead for the rest of the game.

During the second half, Mesa would control the pace of play, at one point extending their lead to 18 points in the fourth quarter.

On the night, it was Leah Goodman who finished with a game high 19 points, hitting five three-pointers while also collecting three assists.  Begay finished with 16 points, five rebounds and three assists while Deja Dagons scored 13 points with three assists.

Mesa is now 8-2 overall in ACCAC conference play while posting a 13-5 overall record.  The T-Birds will play at Phoenix College on Saturday at 2 pm.
