T-Bird Women's BBall Pull Out Big Victory at Home Over Arizona Western, 59-56

Mesa, AZ - It seems odd to be able to play a team twice already this early in the season but the Mesa Thunderbirds and Arizona Western Matadors have tangled twice this season with both games ending in dramatic fashion.

Earlier in the season down in Yuma during the AWC Classic, it was the Matadors who pulled out a one point victory, 66-65.  Just shy of a month later at Theo Heap Gym, it was the T-Birds who reigned triumphant, with a little more importance in this victory as it counts towards a conference win for the T-Birds, who are now 5-0 to finish off the first half of their season.

Led by sophomore point guard Takara Wade, who scored a game high 17 points, Mesa held a 31-25 lead at halftime.

To start the second half, the T-Birds scored the first seven points, four by Anessa Glenn and a three pointer by Leah Goodman.  That put Mesa up 13 which was their largest advantage of the night.  Goodman finished the night with 14 points while Glenn finished with 12 points.

Overall on the night, Mesa shot 20-60 from the field while shooting 14-19 from the free-throw line.  The T-Birds forced 21 Matador turnovers which they turned into 14 points on the other end of the court.

Mesa finishes the first half of their season on a five game winning streak, with an 8-2 overall record and 5-0 conference record.  They will play at the Bill Culver Classic at Scottsdale Community College December 28th and 29th.  They will then travel to Tucson for the Bruce Fleck Classic on December 30th.
