#24 Southern Idaho Holds Off #11 Mesa, 61-53 Final

Mesa, AZ - On the first night of action at the Mesa Classic, it was the College of Southern Idaho Golden Eagles who defeated the Mesa Thunderbirds, 61-53.

With two evenly matched teams, it made for an exciting first night.  Mesa led after quarter one, 18-15, being led by Trae Frazier who scored five of her nine points in the first frame.  It was a Golden Eagle second quarter though, as they outscored the T-Birds 16-6, with five of Mesa's six points coming from Leah Goodman.  The T-Birds shot just 2-11 from the field in the second quarter and 1-4 from three.

Southern Idaho finished the final five minutes on a 11-4 scoring tilt and went into halftime with a 31-24 lead.

The T-Birds did outscore the Golden Eagles in the third quarter, 19-15, with Goodman leading the charge.  It was Goodman's eight points, six of which came from the three, that helped Mesa cut the lead to 46-43.  However for the T-Birds, though they kept it close throughout the second half, they just couldn't manage to take back a lead.

Mesa on the night shot 31.8 percent from the field and were six of 19 from three.  The Golden Eagles out-rebounded the T-Birds, 48-31, with the Golden Eagles outscoring Mesa in the paint, 26-22.

The T-Birds are 1-1 early in the season and will be back in action tomorrow on the final day of the Mesa Classic, with a 2 pm tipoff against GCU Club team, who lost earlier today to Cochise College, 90-25.
