Mesa women battle ACCAC-leading Eastern Arizona, but fall, 63-49

MESA, AZ - Taking on the first-place Eastern Arizona Gila Monsters, unbeaten in ACCAC play with a 10-0 record, the under-manned Mesa women fell, 63-49, Wednesday at Theo Heap Gym in a game that was closer than the final score indicated.

The T-Birds (8-10, 5-5) led much of the first half and trailed just 36-33 at halftime. MCC was up, 20-19, at the end of the first quarter.

The eight-player T-Bird squad seemed to tire after the third quarter. Mesa trailed by just two, 45-43 with 3:08 to go in the third quarter, but EAC's (13-5, 10-0) Christina Ellis canned a pair of free throws that began an 18-6 run to finish the game. MCC shot only 1-13 in the final period.

Brianna Clah (So., Chinle, AZ/Many Farms H.S.) recorded her third straight 20-point-plus game with 20 for the night. Janessa Aukward (So., Laveen, AZ/Sierra Linda H.S.) added ten. Destinee Wright (So., Tolleso, AZ/LaJoya H.S.) contributed ten rebounds.

Mesa finishes the first half of ACCAC play Saturday when it hosts Tohono O'odham in a 2:00 p.m. contest at Theo Heap Gym.
